Arts and Culture hosts Reggae Special Indaba at Freedom Park, 8 to 9 Mar

Arts and Culture to host Reggae Special Indaba at Freedom Park, Pretoria

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) in partnership with the Reggae and Rastafari community will be hosting the reggae special Imbizo to infuse Reggae’s voices and faces into the promotion of social cohesion, nation building, and community conservation.

The special reggae Indaba will take place on Friday, 08 March and Saturday, 09 March 2019 at Freedom Park, Pretoria.

The reggae indaba will amongst others discuss the following objectives: development, integration and mainstreaming of Reggae cultural practice into the music industry and national media channels; strengthening of socio-economic trade relations among Reggae musicians with public and private institutions and to reinstate the role of reggae music in national, provincial and local commemorative cultural events in South Africa.

Most of the Reggae cultural workers, and promoters are found in rural villages, townships and also in urban cities but  their activities or programmes are not well coordinated, organized and often do not receive funding and publicity from government, media or private sector. The indaba will therefore also serve as a platform for the Government to further engage with leaders and key stakeholders within Reggae community; and to devise a plan that will further develop, sustain and stimulate interest on the genre.

As an art form and heritage of African indigenous Rastafari both in Africa and in diaspora, Reggae music has an impact across the globe, and can be used as a device to promote reconciliation, social cohesion, international solidarity, tolerance of diverse cultures, spirituality, languages and nation building. Speakers from across all nine provinces will take part in this conversations.

This session forms part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to reposition the arts, culture and heritage sector as an important segment for economic growth.
