Minister Thulas Nxesi addresses Council for the Built Environment Indaba, 7 Feb

The Council for the Built Environment (CBE) will host its second annual Transformation Indaba on Thursday, 7-8 February 2019 at the CSIR Conference Centre in Pretoria.  Public Works Minister, the Honourable Thulas Nxesi, will present the keynote address to the high-level stakeholders in attendance at the event. In line with this year’s theme of “Igniting the Possibilities”.

it is anticipated that the Honourable Minister’s address will:

  • Track progress on the outcomes of the last year’s Indaba – particularly the Declaration of Intent signed by stakeholders and the national Roadshow that ensued the first Indaba
  • Emphasise how the ‘multi-facetedness’ of transformation affects  every aspect of life in South African society
  • Lay Government’s transformation agenda on the table for both public and private sector role players to collaborate and bolster the Department’s and CBE’s current transformation initiatives

Why a Transformation Indaba?

By virtue of the ‘unique-ness’ of South Africa’s diversity, transformation must be mobilised to include all  previously disadvantaged groups to make it a truly representative and progressive society. Addressing transformation generically is complex enough, never mind tackling transformational issues in a particular sector such as the built environment (building and construction) – one where certain stereotypes are rife such as it is male dominated; only those capable of hard manual labour will succeed etc.

The Council for the Built Environment (CBE), appointed to regulate the South African built environment sector, is tackling these transformation issues head on with stakeholders at this, their second Transformation Indaba.

Indaba topics:

While following up on issues from the first Indaba, the areas of focus will be:

  • The skills shortage in South Africa and resourcing the skills pipeline
  • Optimising job creation opportunities in the South African built environment
  • Improving on current transformation initiatives
  • Taking transformation to the communities
  • Preparing South Africa for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Transformation affects all South African citizens regardless of race, gender, physical dis/ability, lifestyle orientation etc., therefore it is embedded in all of the above areas and must be addressed in order to make our diverse South African society an inclusive and progressive one.

Audience and coverage

The Indaba attracts stakeholders from all walks of the built environment – practising professionals, voluntary associations, government departments, industry, academia, Councils for the Built Environment Professions, and the private sector. Although attendance is limited to the Indaba, the outcomes of the deliberations impact on all ordinary South Africans; therefore, we rely on you as members of the media to take this information out to the public.
