Public investigative hearings on the state of shelters in South Africa

Thursday 5 December 2019, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) continues with the public investigative hearings on the state of shelters in South Africa. The Commission published a report State of Shelters in South Africa during the financial year 2018/2019. The Commission’s investigation reported deep-rooted systemic challenges that need to be addressed by an urgent multi-sectoral response by the institutions that offer services to survivors of violence.

The CGE has heard submissions during the Public Investigative Hearings with the Nine Provincial Department Social Development (DSD) representatives including the Head of Department Safety and Security in Gauteng, Director General at the National Department of Social Development and representatives from the National Treasury. 

Tomorrow,  the Director General of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, the National Police Commissioner and the Director General of the Department of Human Settlement will  appear before the Commission in order to account for their responsibility to respond to gender-based violence (GBV), their role in supporting shelters, their allocation of resources, future planning and inter-departmental coordination in support of GBV.  These departments have functions that impact on Shelters and in some cases, a concurrent mandate/ jurisdiction in Shelters

The hearings with both the National Departments and Provincial Departments will conclude on Friday, 06 December 2019.
