Parliament welcomes agreement to broadcast Provincial Soccer League games on South African Broadcasting Corporation

The Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture has welcomed the agreement regarding the broadcast of Provincial Soccer League (PSL) games on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) television and radio.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Beauty Dlulane said, these are the platforms on which a greater number of South Africans can be reached.

“All sides need to honour their contractual agreement, as agreed to with the Minister, so that the poorest of the poor people of South Africa are able to view future matches without being plunged into darkness, as happened in the past two weeks”, Ms Dlulane said.

It was announced on Friday, that an agreement was reached between the SABC and MultiChoice, and that it is a long term agreement. Ms Dlulane said, the committee also welcomed the establishment of the women’s football league.

The committee believes that the woman’s league will strengthen women’s games by offering regular competition. Ms Dlulane said: “Regular game time is crucial for any athlete to develop personally, emotionally and otherwise. The committee is excited by this formalisation of women’s football in the country, and believes it will provide the necessary administrative impetus and financial stipend for athletes.”

She said the welfare of women football players is critical and that it needs not to be based on what the national men’s team is offered.
