North West on important role played by traditional leaders

Province throw its weight behind traditional leaders

The North West Provincial Government is serious about promoting the provision of integrated services to communities by all spheres (national, provincial and local) of government.

MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Mothibedi Gordon Kegakilwe has reminded traditional leaders of the important developmental role that they play in their communities. He was addressing a meeting of traditional leaders in Rustenburg.

Most of the developments that happen, take place on traditional land and it is therefore important that you are also kept abreast and consulted when important decisions are taken to bring developments in your communities. Section 81 of the Municipal Structures Act directs that traditional leaders be represented in municipal council meetings in a municipality that has traditional leaders. We respect the role of traditional leaders and we will give them space to lead their communities without interference'' he said.

He recommitted the provincial government's support towards traditional councils and support staff throughout the province. He committed the department to addressing most of the issues raised by traditional leaders such as office accommodation, working tools etc. as a matter of urgency. He appealed to them to work with the provincial government in ensuring that only legitimate initiation schools operate in their areas.

It is that time of the year when our children will be going for initiation because it is the winter season and my appeal to you is that no lives must be lost in the process'', he said.
