President Cyril Ramaphosa saddened by Limpopo road carnage

President Cyril Ramaphosa has learned with sadness of the tragic passing away of more than 27 people, amongst them two small children, in a multiple vehicle accident on the N1 North in Limpopo Province.

A 22 seater minibus, truck and light delivery vehicle were involved in an accident on Friday 19 October 2018 on the N1 North between Mookgophong and Kranskop.

President Ramaphosa expresses his condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery.

The President has also praised emergency services crews and the Department of Transport for their swift actions on the scene and their efforts to get urgent medical attention to the victims.

President Ramaphosa said “No effort should be spared to ensure tragedies of this nature are completely avoidable. Road users are urged to exercise both courtesy and caution on our roads. It is all the more worrying considering that barely a month ago 11 people lost their lives on the same stretch of road when a bus overturned.”

The President added: “I repeat the message we as government continuously reinforce, more so during October which is National Transport Month - speeding can and does kill.”

The President has encouraged anyone who observes unsafe behaviour on the roads to report this to law enforcement agencies.
