Presidential Golf Challenge to benefit schools sanitation

President Cyril Ramaphosa will participate at the 2020 Presidential Golf Challenge (PGC) and fundraising dinner to promote safe and appropriate sanitation in schools across the country.

The Challenge takes place at Atlantic Golf Club, Melkbosstrand, at 07h30 tomorrow, Friday 14 February 2020.

The Presidential Golf Challenge is hosted annually by the Department of Public Service and Administration following the State of the Nation Address.

The Challenge is a partnership between government that generates funding for developmental initiatives.

The 2020 Challenge will raise contributions in support of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, which is an independent Public Benefit Organisation.

The foundation implements programmes to develop education, youth and vulnerable children and women. It also implements its mission through the following partner entities: Adopt-A-School Foundation, Kagiso Shanduka Trust, Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust and Black Umbrellas.

The funds raised at the 2020 Challenge will be committed to sanitation projects at schools across the country through the Adopt-A-School as part of the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) initiative. This initiative aims to ensure that every school in the country has safe and appropriate sanitation facilities.

The SAFE Initiative, led by the Department of Basic Education in partnership with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is a response to the significant school sanitation challenges facing some of the country’s poorest schools.

The initiative aims to provide innovative, safe ablution facilities for the 3 898 rural and township schools, where sanitation has been found to be inadequate or unsafe.

The Presidential Golf Challenge raises funds for charities designated by the sitting President and is an opportunity for networking among decision-makers from the private sector and entities from the three spheres of government.

The Challenge also affords the President an opportunity to emphasise the role of corporate social investment in poverty alleviation and the transformation of society.

The President will open this year’s Challenge by teeing off with his seven-year-old playing partner and prodigy Simthandile “SimTiger” Tshabalala who has represented the country in various international tournaments including the September 2019 Canadian Invitational tournament.

Attending the PGC will be Cabinet Ministers, Directors-General, heads of state-owned enterprises and executives from the private sector.
