Premier Alan Winde and award winning actor Forest Whitaker on building safer communities and promoting peace

Premier Winde meets with award winning actor Forest Whitaker

This afternoon, Premier Alan Winde held an introductory meeting with multi-award winning actor and United Nations special envoy, Forest Whitaker.

Mr Whitaker briefed the Premier on the work that his foundation, the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative, is doing in the Western Cape, working with young people on the Cape Flats.

The initiative works with young men and women in South Sudan, Uganda, Mexico, South Africa and the United States to develop their skills as leaders and peace builders. Part of the work they do also encourages and supports young people to start their own businesses. These are matters that are close to the Premier's heart.

Premier Winde in turn briefed him on the violence prevention work the Western Cape Government has committed to as part of its recently announced safety plan. He also offered assistance and support and highlighted the importance of building partnerships between government, communities and civil society in order to help build safer communities and promote peace.
