Premier Job Mokgoro condemns torching of Councillors’ homes in Khuma

North West Premier Prof Tebogo Job Mokgoro has today condemned the torching of several houses belonging to City of Matlosana councilors in violent protests in Khuma township near Stilfontein.

Premier Mokgoro met with protesting residents in the afternoon today following the outbreak of violent protests earlier this morning.

The Premier was attending an NCOP gathering in nearby Orkney when he was alerted of the protest.

He then rushed to the township, accompanied by the MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Mr Sello Lehari and the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Mr Gordon Kegakilwe.

The residents informed Premier Mokgoro that they had submitted a memorandum of grievances and demands to the City of Matlosana Municipality at the beginning of August and had not yet received word from the muncipality regarding those demands.

The demands included amongst others, allocation of land by the municipality for housing as well as improved infrastructure in the township.

Premier Mokgoro has committed to attend to the demands; while involving the City of Matlosana Municipality and will be visiting the area tomorrow; this time accompanied by the entire North West Executive Council, as follows; to provide feedback to the community on their demands

The Premier will depart for Khuma after the EXCO meeting taking place tomorrow morning at the City of Matlosana Municipality Chambers in Klerksdorp.

The memorandum that he received from the residents has been included for discussion at tomorrow’s EXCO meeting.
