Premier David Makhura unveils R25m Randfontein Library

Gauteng Premier David Makhura, today 13 March 2019, officially opened the R25m worth Randfontein Community Library. The state of the art facility will serve communities of Randfontein with much needed services including free Wi-Fi, mzansi libraries online centre, children and toddler area, study centre, computer lab and workstations for the blind and visually Impaired.

The construction and delivery of these facilities come as Gauteng continues to invest in its people, especially looking at educating, training and empowering young people.

According to Premier Makhura the library will mean more than just a study centre.

“This facility will more than serve as a centre for learning but also as a hub for human interaction. It will and should provide opportunities to find jobs, to explore various research and experience new ideas”.

The premier encouraged the community to care for the library.

“Libraries are a sacred space of information and should never be destroyed. They should be cared for and used responsibly by all. With this facility we are richer than before”.

Premier Makhura revealed that his ANC-led Provincial government has built 285 new community libraries since 1994, of which 21 were delivered in the past five (5) years.

The library will be handed over to the Rand West Municipality for operation. Accepting the facility, Executive Mayor Mzi Khumalo welcomed the generous offer from the Premier and the provincial government.

According to him the much-needed facility will “help create jobs, develop and improve knowledge of the people of Rand West as we seek to inculcate the culture of reading”.

Built by the Department of Infrastructure Development on behalf of Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, construction on the Randfontein Community Library began in January 2018 and was completed and December 2018 at an investment of R25 million.

Speaking at the handover of the Occupancy Certificate DID MEC Jacob Mamabolo said that the project benefited the community by employing local contractors and 69 labourers.

“We are giving you a modern building which responds to extreme weather conditions that come with climate change. The building has been constructed to be energy efficient.”

“We have fitted this facility with water harvesting and irrigation technology and we’ve built it so that we allow a lot of natural light into the building to reduce reliance on the electricity grid,” Mamabolo added.

Says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation: We are transforming not only the landscape but lives of our communities, especially in previously disadvantaged communities where were facilities like libraries never existed. We are doing this to afford them opportunities to build better lives and better communities”.
