By 5pm on 12 September 2021, the Western Cape Government had administered a cumulative total of 2 423 362 vaccines to healthcare workers, staff in the education sector and those within eligible age brackets.
The current 7-day moving average is 65 deaths per day.

Western Cape Government assists in vaccinating taxi drivers & commuters
Today, the Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works, Daylin Mitchell, and the Provincial Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, held a vaccination drive at a pop-up vaccination site at the Cape Town Taxi Rank.
The purpose of the vaccination drive was to vaccinate taxi drivers, commuters and vendors in the area who have served on the frontline throughout the pandemic.
The vaccination drive was further attended by the Mayoral Committee Member for Health, Dr Zahid Badroodien, the Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Rob Quintas and the SANTACO Chairperson, Nazeem Abduramahn.
I welcome these innovative measures to encourage vaccine uptake among those who are unvaccinated. It is also very positive to see the demand for vaccines among those who are in the transport sector and among those who make use of public transport.
Minister Mbombo said: "As part of taking vaccines to people, today I was at the Cape Town Taxi Rank to vaccinate Taxi Drivers, and street hawkers. These are the people who find it difficult to go to vaccination sites due to their working hours. I was encouraged by the number of men who came for their vaccines and we made sure to give them J&J so they won’t have to come again. It is critical for people to know that getting vaccinated decreases the risk of hospitalisation and possible death hence I call on the eligible people of the Western Cape to present themselves to vaccination. This will save our summer, remember vaccines saves lives."
Western Cape fully vaccinates over 1 million people
Over the past week, the province has reached a milestone of fully vaccinating over 1 million people. I commend those who have gotten vaccinated and who are playing their part in protecting themselves and those around them.
By Sunday 12 September 2021, 679 213 people have been partially vaccinated and will be eligible for their second dose soon.
I encourage those who are not yet vaccinated to take up your vaccine opportunity. Vaccines are safe and are highly effective in preventing severe COVID-19 illness that leads to hospitalisation and death.
Should you have any concerns, I encourage you to consult with your healthcare professional and to engage with family members or friends on their experiences of getting vaccinated.
We must ensure that we keep up the momentum and leave no person behind so that we have a summer to look forward to.
