Cases are beginning to plateau amid peak of third wave

The Western Cape is currently in the peak of its third wave, with a plateauing of new infections, hospital admissions and deaths. We continue to closely monitor our data for an indication of when we might begin to descend from the peak.

As of today, our healthcare platform shows us that in the Western Cape:

  • The reproductive number for the province is now around 1 which shows us that infections are plateauing.
  • There has been a slight increase in cases over the last week with 3 149 new cases each day based on the 7-day moving average.
  • There are 41 525 active cases and there have sadly been 16 139 cumulative deaths. The new cases are beginning to slow.
  • The test proportion positive remains high at approximately 40.8%.
  • Hospital admissions are at approximately 336 new admissions daily and there are 106 deaths per day on average. The rate of new admissions is slowing, also pointing to a plateau at the peak.

As we remain in the peak, our hospital system remains under pressure. While it continues to cope over this time, we need to do everything possible to protect it. Our behaviour remains the best way to do this.

Please:

  • Wear your mask properly, covering your nose and mouth.
  • Wash and sanitise your hands regularly.
  • Avoid crowded places, confined spaces and close contact.
  • Keep your gatherings short, small and outdoors – with lots of ventilation.
  • Drink responsibly and do not drink and drive.
  • Get vaccinated when it is your turn.
  • Stay home if you feel sick. If you have any difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical treatment.
  • Help protect those at highest risk – especially those who are older, and those with comorbidities.
  • Continue to protect your family bubble.

Let’s play our part in flattening the curve and saving lives.
