Western Cape Government celebrates Brackengate Hospital of Hope’s first anniversary

This week, the Western Cape Government is celebrating the Brackengate Hospital of Hope’s first anniversary and their sterling efforts to ensure that our healthcare platform can respond, and with the necessary agility.

Premier Winde said: “Facilities such as Brackengate provide reassurance to our residents that we can and will move forward. As we do so, I call on residents to support our heroic nurses and doctors by registering and receiving their vaccines, should they be eligible.”

Since it first opened its doors on 20 July 2021, Brackengate Hospital of Hope’s healthcare workers has saved more than 3 000 lives. The facility has recorded 4 346 admissions. Of which 3 390 people have recovered, and 533 were transferred to tertiary institutions for further care.

Speaking to the important work of Brackengate Hospital of Hope, CEO Maria Brink said: “Looking back 18 months ago, none of us would have believed what lay ahead of us. No one could have foreseen a disease that would bring humanity worldwide to a collective standstill. Frontline workers and health management have worked tirelessly since the very beginning to attempt to cope with the devastation caused by COVID. Tirelessly.”

The Provincial Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said: “Opening the Brackengate Hospital of Hope played an important role in Western Cape Government Health’s strategy to ensure sufficient capacity to care for COVID-19 patients who needed hospitalisation. I want to thank everyone who worked behind the scenes to open and maintain this facility, as well as our healthcare workers for their dedication, passion, and commitment in taking care of our COVID-19 patients.”

Western Cape Government thanks all those serving on the frontline and ensuring the safety of those most vulnerable and at-risk amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
