The Western Cape has recorded 20 additional deaths since our last daily update on Monday, 14 June, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 11 981. It should be noted that the total number is inclusive of historical deaths which have recently been updated. We send our condolences to the loved ones of those who have passed.

Premier Winde calls for residents to be safe this public holiday
Tomorrow, we will commemorate youth day and I call on residents to stay safe over the public holiday.
I remind residents to avoid gatherings at this time as we are experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 infections.
If you must meet with family and friends, please be responsible, by keeping your gathering small, short and outside, where there is lots of good ventilation.
I also urge residents to be responsible over this period and make wise decisions. This also means that should you wish to drink alcohol; you must do so responsibly. Please do not drink and drive, and ensure that you rest properly if you are travelling.
Minister Schäfer urges adherence to golden rules at all times during third wave
The Provincial Minister of Education, Debbie Schäfer, has noted that with the Western Cape now in the third wave, we are seeing more evidence of community-level transmission which in turn affects our schools. There are currently 148 active cases amongst school staff members and 314 active cases amongst learners in the Western Cape.
Minister Schäfer said: “I appeal to our learners to behave responsibly at all times. It is all very well to follow the golden rules at school, but if they do not follow them when not at school, they put themselves, their families, and their friends at risk.”
“I make a further appeal to parents: please, consider the implications of allowing your child to attend unnecessary gatherings. I understand that our learners – and their parents – have been through a stressful time during this pandemic, and want to relax and socialise with friends. But we cannot afford to let our guard down after school hours, because the short-term benefit of having fun is outweighed by the risk of infection. The higher the rate of infection, the higher the chance of tighter restrictions, so it is up to each one of us to act responsibly.”
Premier Winde calls on young people to spare 6 minutes for 60+
This youth day, I call on young people to spare 6 minutes for 60+ by helping those who have not yet done so and who are eligible to register for their COVID-19 vaccine. This is a powerful way to make a real difference in your communities as the vaccine will save lives and jobs.
