Premier Alan Winde confirms total of 299 940 cases of Coronavirus COVID-19 in Western Cape

As at 1pm on 11 June 2021, the Western Cape had 6430 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number of 299 940 COVID-19 cases to date and 281 574 recoveries. 

By 5pm on 10 June 2021, the Western Cape Government had administered:

The Western Cape has recorded 0 additional deaths since our last daily update on Thursday, 10 June, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 11 923.

“Premier Winde calls on residents to be vigilant over the weekend as province is entering third wave”

During my weekly digital press conference yesterday, I announced that the Western Cape is entering a third wave of COVID-19 infections.

Last night, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of South Africa (NICD) confirmed that the country is also officially in its third wave. 

For this reason, I call on residents to continue practicing the important and lifesaving behaviours that they have adopted over the past year to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

More than ever, we must continue to wash and sanitise our hands regularly, wear our masks correctly and maintain a safe social distance from other people. This will ensure that we flatten the curve of the third wave.

If we are visiting or meeting with friends and family over the weekend, let’s keep it short, outside and small – with good ventilation. This will reduce our chances of being infected and transmitting the virus.

We must also remember to avoid the 3Cs of crowded places, confined spaces and close contact.

We must not and cannot give up. As more and more vaccines are being rolled out, we can have hope that this pandemic will be brought under control. In the meantime, we must continue to do whatever we can to stop the spread.

“Western Cape exceeds vaccine targets each week since beginning Phase 2”

The Western Cape has exceeded its weekly vaccine targets each week since starting Phase 2 of its mass vaccination programme.

Ensuring a successful vaccine rollout is essential as we need to protect our residents’ lives and livelihoods, particularly as we enter the third wave.

For this reason, we are working around the clock to ensure a successful vaccination programme. This has resulted in:

• 10 327 vaccines administered in the first week against a target of 10 000;
• 35 906 vaccines administered in the second week against a target of 30 000; and
• 66 885 vaccines administered in the third week against a target of 60 000.

We are also on track to achieve our revised target of 70 000 vaccines administered this week. This target was lowered from 120 000 based on the doses we received from the national government, which were less than anticipated.

To date, we have vaccinated 167 886 persons during Phase 2 and have used 85.4% of the phase 2 vaccine allocation.

From Monday, 14 June, we plan to have 189 active vaccination sites up and running. The allocated vaccines could also impact the number of sites activated. The names of the sites per area will be updated on our registration dashboard over the weekend, which can be viewed here: https://coronavirus.westerncape.gov.za/vaccine-dashboard.

It is vitally important that persons over the age of 60 register for the vaccination. The process is quick and easy and can be done by dialing *134*832# from your phone to start the registration process or sending the word “REGISTER” to 0600 123 456 on WhatsApp.
