“COVID-19 vaccination rollout programme makes steady progress at old age homes”

We welcome the steady progress being made in ensuring that senior citizens who reside in old age homes receive their COVID-19 vaccine. This is in line with Phase 2 of the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out plan, which includes all citizens who are 60 years and older.

We are prioritising the residents of old age homes because they live in congregant settings and are among the most at-risk of serious illness and death.

As of 25 May 2021, 4426 older persons had been vaccinated across 57 old age homes in the province. This equates to 55% of our target for over 60s in congregate settings. Until we see our target met, there is still more work to be done.

That is why, this week, we are visiting old age homes across our rural districts as part of a dedicated vaccination drive. Through this drive, we are vaccinating willing residents at 7 old age homes in the Overberg District, 6 old age homes in the Garden Route District, 4 old age homes in the West Coast District, 1 old age home in the Central Karoo and 29 old age homes in the Cape Winelands.

All residential facilities are encouraged to urgently assist residents who are 60 years and older to register on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS).

“Radical ramp up in vaccinations from this week”

Whilst we embark on these dedicated drives, we are also intently focused on ramping up the speed of our mass vaccination programme, as well as its reach into rural areas, by rapidly opening more sites across the province.

We have set ambitious targets in this regard, and are aiming to move from vaccinating over 6000 residents per day this week, to 12 000 per day next week, to 24 000 per day the week thereafter. We have worked out our ramp-up plan in accordance with the supply of vaccines we expect to receive. In this regard, we are pleased to report that we are due another shipment of Pfizer doses tomorrow, as well as two further shipments in the early weeks of June, all of which will enable us to move quickly to vaccinate more residents. We are eagerly anticipating news on the J&J vaccines we were due to receive, which will allow us to do even more.

We are also working actively to open more sites across the province so that residents are able to be vaccinated as close to home as possible. This week, we are aiming to open 33 additional sites, 6 of which are in rural areas. Next week, we aim to open another 49 sites, 36 of which are in rural areas. We are aiming to open a further 17 sites the week thereafter.

Overall, the Western Cape will be opening hundreds of sites across the province over the course of the vaccination programme this year.

This includes:

  • 70 sites in the City of Cape Town
  • 48 sites in the Overberg District
  • 53 sites in the West Coast District
  • 14 sites in the Central Karoo District
  • 41 sites in the Garden Route District
  • 48 sites in the Cape Winelands District

Residents can rest assured that a vaccination centre will shortly be opened within good proximity to their home.
