The Western Cape has recorded 9 additional deaths since our last daily update on Monday, 17 May, bringing the total number of Covid-19 related deaths in the province to 11 720. We send our condolences to their loved ones at this time.

“#LetsDoThis: Western Cape’s vaccine registration drive”
There is growing demand to register for the COVID-19 vaccine in the Western Cape, and we must assist those who don’t have access to the internet to register for their vaccine. No person must be left behind in the Western Cape.
To help drive these registrations, the Western Cape Government has introduced a number of initiatives:
- We are promoting registration of those 60 years and older in congregate settings such as old age homes, care homes for persons with disabilities and mental health residential facilities. The Provincial Departments of Health and Social Development are also working with the National Department of Health to ensure that residents and staff are registered on the EVDS.
- We are deploying outreach teams to these facilities to administer the vaccinations, from 17 May 2021, commencing with old age homes.
- We are deploying Community Health Workers to provide information on registrations and vaccines as they conduct their routine door-to-door activities.
- We have trained staff at our 75 Cape Access Centres to assist residents to register. These centres provide internet for free to communities in our rural communities.
We have also put in place plans to assist with registration more broadly, which include:
- Launching a media campaign, in all three languages, using a variety of media that will reach as many people as possible in the Western Cape; and
- Calling on younger residents to help those who are 60 years and older to register, and for the public to assist.
It is very important that we continue to register as many people who are 60 years and older for their vaccines. If you are not yet eligible, help someone who is, to register.

If you are over 60 and registered for your COVID-19 vaccine, you can expect:
- An SMS confirming your registration.
- A second SMS with an appointment date and the place – for those who have already registered this should come in the next 2-3 weeks.
- Get vaccinated with your first dose.
- Proof of vaccination card.
- An appointment date for your second dose (if two-dose vaccine).
