Parliament sends condolences to Mayosi family

Science and Technology committee sends condolences on the death of Professor Bongani Mayosi

The Portfolio Committee on Science and Technology is saddened by the death of Professor Bongani Mayosi.

The Chairperson of the committee Ms Lindiwe Maseko said it is indeed a loss not only to South Africa or the African continent, but to the entire world. As a cardiologist, Professor Mayosi was a leading medical researcher. Through his research capability he was able to isolate the heart attack gene. He was also highly regarded for his work on preventing rheumatic fever and on tuberculosis of the heart.

At the time of his death he was the dean of the faculty of health services at the University of Cape Town.

On behalf of the committee, Ms Maseko sends her condolences to the family, friends, medical fraternity, Professor Mayosi’s colleagues and students at the University of Cape Town. “We wish them strength during this difficult time” said Ms Maseko.
