North West Legislature Speaker to Convene Stakeholders' Dialogue to address Violence against Women and Children

On Thursday, 12 September 2019, the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Sussana Dantjie will convene the Legislature Stakeholders' Dialogue under the theme: "NWPL calls for unity to end violence against women and children," in Legislature Auditorium at 09h00.

Given the current and prevailing situation in the country, Hon. Dantjie deemed it necessary to convene the dialogue where leaders of political parties represented in the Legislature and community based organisations will raise their concerns in one voice. "We need to speak as different organisations within our society to call for peace and unity in the country. The programme will also afford each political party an opportunity to speak on their position on the matter to end violence against women and children and it will end with a prayer session," said Hon. Dantjie.

"We also call on all sectors of the society to join hands in the call for harsher sentences against perpetrators convicted for cases of violence against women and children. These people must be locked away for a very long time as they form part of perpetrators who commit gruesome crimes on women and children. Women are part of the economic growth in our country yet they are the most vulnerable and marginalised by the very same people who are supposed to protect them," said Hon. Dantjie.

She said the Legislature support efforts by the broader society to march against women and children violence. "It is disheartening to find that in this country, women die at the hands of the very same men that are supposed to protect them. We have spoken enough and its time our efforts are taken serious and these perpetrators are dealt with, with the harshest punishments," said Hon. Dantjie.

About 1000 people from different political parties represented in the legislature; staff members in the legislature; non-governmental and faith-based organisations; higher education institutions and municipalities are invited to attend.

On Friday, the Speaker will hold a Provincial Speakers' Forum and will launch a Learnership programme for 50 orphans in the province in the same venue at 09h00.

Media are invited to attend the event and can contact Mr Teboho Chaane at 076 332 8270.
