North West Province to mark World Food Day
MEC Desbo Mohono of Agriculture and Rural Development in the North West Province will on Friday, 11 October 2019 lead the annual provincial World Food Day commemoration in Ntswana Le Metsing, Magong Village outside Rustenburg town.
Held yearly on the 16th of October, World Food Day is a day of action dedicated to tackling global hunger. This day reaffirms that, food should become a human right for all, and that everyone has the right to access safe and nutritious food that is consistent with the right to adequate food and the fundamental right of everyone to be free from hunger.
With the slow international economic growth in general and in South Africa in particular combined with the recent drought, the focus this year will be on sustainable projects delivered by the department as well as encouraging residents to start planting on fields that are lying fallow in order to increase food production to fight the scourge of poverty, hunger and malnutrition amongst communities.
The commemoration also seeks to promote food production and to stimulate national, bi-lateral, trans-national and non-governmental initiatives, encourage research and technology development for the development of symbiotic ecological food production systems to ensure sustainable food production, enhance the participation of rural people, particularly women and the under privileged in decisions and events impacting their living conditions, heighten public awareness on the government programmes aimed at halving hunger in South Africa, as well as raising awareness of the public regarding the contribution of indigenous forests to food security and nutrition.
On the day, local beneficiaries will receive the supplies and the training they need to produce their own food; MEC Mohono will also plant vegetable gardens, handover production inputs for crop production and outline her department’s programme of action geared at eradicating hunger.
The 2019 provincial world food day event will be celebrated under the theme “Our Actions are our Future. Healthy Diets for #Zero Hunger World”.
