Gauteng e-Gov MEC honours SA women this Women’s Month

MEC for Finance and e-Government Ms Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, on 09 August 2022, joined scores of people as they marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in honour of Women's Day. The Women's Day March hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, was intended to protest against gender-based violence which is rising at an alarming rate in South Africa.

Leading the march, Gauteng Premier Mr David Makhura, said they will not rest for as long as women bear the brunt of criminality, particularly that of gender-based violence in South Africa.

"This morning I join the ANC Women's League as we marched to the Union Buildings as part of our recommitment to be at the forefront, 365 days of putting an end to all crimes against women," said the Premier.

The march was followed by a panel discussion which included discussions on how to address the challenges that women face nowadays, such as poverty, financial exclusion, and gender-based violence.

In keeping with the spirit of Women's Month, MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, hosted a Mandela Experience Lunch on, 10 August 2022, in celebration of Women's month. The lunch hosted under the theme 'Extending the Dalibhunga Dishes Honouring Women', was specially prepared by the late Dr Nelson Mandela's former health chef, Mr Vuyani Nkosi, who specializes in healthy cooking.

Joining the MEC were some of South Africa's living legends and inspirational women in the arts and entertainment industry including Ms Marah Louw, and Ms Abigail Kubheka.

Explaining the purpose of the lunch MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said this was her way of acknowledging and celebrating the phenomenal women who have made a significant contribution not only to the arts but to the lives of many women all over the country.

"It was very important for me to host this lunch not only to share a healthy and hearty meal with a few of South Africa's most inspiring women, but also to acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful work they have done in the lives of many South Africans. In addition to being accomplished artists in their own disciplines, the women who have joined me today are also highly involved in addressing the daily challenges that are faced by women on a daily basis,".

MEC added that the department will continue to advocate for women's rights, and through its various initiatives will ensure that women are supported and exposed to the available developmental and economic opportunities.
