National Commissioner Khehla John Sitole welcomes life sentences handed down to rapist

The National Commissioner of Police General Khehla John Sitole has welcomed the 13 life sentences plus 185 years imprisonment handed down to a rapist yesterday. The 31 year old convict, Sibusiso Ndlovu was sent to prison yesterday after being found guilty in the Gauteng High Court on 54 counts, including rape, kidnapping and assault that he committed for over a year between 2015 and 2016 in the areas of the East and West Rand, Gauteng.

In welcoming the sentence, the National Commissioner also praised the investigation team under the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Gauteng  and the prosecuting authority for their hard work in ensuring that justice prevailed. "The investigation into these cases and the subsequent conviction and sentencing of the accused is indicative of SAPS’s determination and commitment to decisively deal with those committing gender-based violence,” said General Sitole.

"This is one of many cases where the FCS Unit has secured multiple life sentences against perpetrators of gender-based crimes. We certainly hope this will serve as a hindrance to gender-based violence,” added General Sitole. In the last financial year, 2018/2019 the SAPS secured 658 life sentences against serial rapists and perpetrators of Gender-Based-Violence.
