Minister Zweli Mkhize tables 2017/18 annual report of Department of Traditional Affairs to Parliament

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr Zweli Mkhize has tabled the 2017/18 Annual Report of the Department of Traditional Affairs in Parliament. 

Some of the highlights include the finalization of the Customary Initiation Bill which was approved by Cabinet.  

The department also made progress on legally recognizing indigenous people through the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill in Parliament which was finalized in the year under review by the National Assembly and was referred to the National Council of Provinces.

The Department of Traditional Affairs is founded on the following five pillars:

  • Restoration, stabilisation and strengthening of traditional leadership institution;
  • Development of policies, legislation and regulations towards transformation of the sector;
  • Establishment of partnerships for revival and activation of economic activities and participation towards sustainable livelihoods in traditional communities, working in collaboration with other Sector Departments and private sector; Promotion of cultural and customary way of life which conforms to the Bill of Rights, Constitutional and democratic principles; and
  • Coordination of the interfaith sector to promote social cohesion and nation building
