Employment and Labour Minister T.W Nxesi launches the state of occupational health and safety (OHS) report
Employment and Labour Minister T.W Nxesi is to address an online webinar to launch a report on the state of the South African occupational health and safety (OHS).
The report under the theme: A new beginning – launch of the South African state of occupational health and safety (OHS) report is a project commissioned jointly by the International Labour Organization and the Department and focusses on the profile of occupational health and safety in workplaces.
It provides a historical analysis of occupational health and safety in South Africa. The report contains a number of key themes and insights that came out of the confidential, semi-structured in-depth interviews with 34 purposefully selected participants.
Themes identified in the interview responses include: COVID-19 Opportunities; Enforcement of legislation; Poor Compliance and occupational safety and health (OSH) Committees; Gender and the Informal Sector; Complex Legislation; Poor reporting yet increasing claims and lack of awareness; Partnerships; Human resources challenges for inspection; Better enforcement in the mines; Importance of safety and occupational health; Aligning Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and OHSA, length of time to amend legislation; OHSA dependent on definition of an employer and employee, and, The role of SALGA and municipalities.
Minister Nxesi will share the launch webinar with Director-General Thobile Lamati; Inspector-General Aggy Moiloa; National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) executive Dr Spo Kgalamono; ILO Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Specialist Peneyambeko Munkawa; Compensation Fund Commissioner Vuyo Mafata and Chief Inspector Tibor Szana.
There will also be speakers from organised business and labour.
