Minister Senzeni Zokwana launches Institute for Development Assistance Management Book at Alice Campus, 5 Apr

Minister and University of Fort Hare to initiate a process of an establishment of Veterinary Sciences School and launch Idam Book

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Honourable Mr Senzeni Zokwana and the University of Fort Hare (UFH) invite members of the media to the initiation of the process of the establishment of Veterinary Sciences School and launch of the Institute for Development Assistance Management (IDAM) Book and on 5 April at Alice Campus.

The Minister launched the Institute for Development Assistance Management on 22 March 2016 with specific focus on training and capacity building of professionals and /or officials in agriculture, forestry and fisheries in international aid management. Because of its strong historical background and high expertise in Agriculture, Fort Hare University was appointed as the host for the Institute for Development Assistance Management.

The University leaves in its trail one of the most profound contributions to the leadership of South Africa and Africa. Its alumni wall of fame features the name of Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe, among others.

The positions achieved by many of Fort Hare’s alumni has been amazing in terms of influence in the geopolitics of the last century and the institution has produced some of Africa’s most prominent voices.

The collaboration of DAFF, FAO and UFH in the establishment of IDAM aimed to address the shortage of trained officials dealing with Development Assistance across all sectors of government, in particular agriculture and food security.

The Eastern Cape has the largest population of livestock in the country, it is not surprising for Fort Hare University to want host the country’s second Veterinary Sciences School.

The Alice campus is ready to host the Establishment of Veterinary Sciences School within its renowned Faculty of Agriculture.

The Alice Campus has an impeccable track record of producing agricultural scientists of note. Over the past decades, the province has struggled to get the required number of animal health practitioners and suitable veterinarians to look after the well-being of the provincial herd.

The proposed veterinary sciences faculty will partner with medical schools in the Eastern Cape and elsewhere to provide a combined intensive training in the new concept of One Health, to its graduates and those of other medical schools.

The Minister will conclude the launch by visiting the Nguni Cattle Development Project, Agri-Park Project and Biogas Project.
