Minister Nathi Mthethwa to host Ministerial Imbizo on Maskandi

Arts and Culture Minister, Hon Nathi Mthethwa will on Friday, 31 August 2018 conduct a special Imbizo on Maskandi music genre to discuss challenges, opportunities and tensions within the Maskandi fraternity at The Play House Company, Durban in KwaZulu Natal.

The event will provide a platform for the broader Maskandi sector to begin engagements on the proposed plans and to share views on how the sector can be supported.

Maskandi music is one of the indigenous genres that have evolved and became big in South Africa. Over the years, this genre has told a story of deeply rooted indigenous communities, addressing the issues of land tax, abuse, and other social ills, while also enhancing nation building and social cohesion.

The Imbizo will also serve as platform for Minister Mthethwa to further engage key stakeholder within Maskandi music fraternity to devise a plan that will develop, sustain and stimulate interest on genre. This also forms part of the department’s ongoing efforts to reposition the arts, culture and heritage sector as an important segment for economic growth.
