Minister Lindiwe Zulu briefs media on educational outcomes of matric class of 2019 learners receiving social protection services, 23 Jan

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu invites members of the media to a briefing session on educational outcomes of the matric class of 2019 learners receiving social protection services.

Outcome13 of the National Development Plan (Vision 2030) proposes a comprehensive social protection system to address the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality in South Africa. The NDP also proposes the development of the National Integrated Protection Information System (NISPIS) across the social sector to monitor and evaluate the impact of government’s social protection interventions.

Since 2012, the Department started tracking the educational outcomes of learners receiving social protection services with the view to locate and improve the well-being of vulnerable children through education which is an essential building block in South Africa’s progress towards sustainable development agenda.

During the briefing session, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will provide an update on the status of the application of learners receiving social protection services.  This follows a ground breaking agreement between Social Development, Basic Education and NSFAS that learners receiving social protection services should be exempted from the means test.
