South Africa's Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, is in Malawi to attend the First Extra-ordinary Summit for the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government Championing Education, Science and Technology in Africa (C10).
The C10 was endorsed by the African Union (AU) Assembly held in January in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was constituted as part of efforts to promote science and innovation, given their critical role in enhancing socio-economic growth on the continent.
The member states are Kenya, Mauritius, Malawi, Namibia, Chad, Gabon, Tunisia, Egypt, Sierra Leone and Senegal.
The summit, which starts this morning (Friday, 2 November) under the theme "Enhancing education, science and technology for Africa's development", is chaired by the Republic of Senegal's President Macky Sall. It is being held at the Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe.
As the AU's Third Vice-Chair of the Specialised Technical Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Kubayi-Ngubane has been invited to speak on "Women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics" at the plenary session of Ministers and Senior Officials. The session will be followed by the meeting of the Heads of State tomorrow (Saturday, 3 November).
