Transport Minister Mbalula hosts ambassadors ahead of IMO General Assembly

South Africa will contest a seat in the Council of the United Nations’ (UN) specialised agency on maritime affairs, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) at the 31st IMO Regular Session to be held from November 25th November to the 4th of December 2019 in London, United Kingdom.

The country’s re-election campaign has been led by the Department of Transport under the leadership of Minister Fikile Mbalula.

The election campaign launched by the Department early this year focused on lobbying the international community to vote for South Africa’s re-election under Category C of the IMO convention.

As part of the push to lobby support for the country’s re-election bid, Minister Mbalula and South Africa will host a special reception for the members of the diplomatic community from different countries.

The reception will give the country an opportunity to interact with different countries about South Africa’s intension to be re-elected to the Council of the IMO as the Department of Transport wraps up the re-election campaign which commenced early this year.

South Africa’s re-election to the IMO Council will ensure the continued representation of the Southern African Developing Community (SADC) sub-region, the Republic  being the only country contesting the election from the SADC.
