Minister Mbalula and PRASA to report on PRASA’s recovery and actions taken to fight corruption and maladministration

The Minister of Transport, Mr. Fikile Mbalula together with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Board and Executive Management will give a comprehensive account of interventions made to recover and stabilize the agency for optimal performance following years of mismanagement and allegations of corruption. 

This forms part of the Minister’s oversight visit to track progress by the Board in meeting its targets to turn PRASA around as mandated through the Shareholders’ Compact. This will be followed by the Minister's detailed account of the agency’s Reconstruction and Recovery programme, outlining decisions taken to guard against irregular expenditure. 

The Board will also give an account of steps taken to fight against corruption and the implementation of the Report on investigation into allegations of maladministration relating to financial mismanagement, tender irregularities and appointment irregularities by the Public Protector. 

The Minister and PRASA Board will also conduct an oversight visit of the closed corridors in Gauteng- Leralla to JHB, Naledi to JHB and Pienaarspoort to PTA - to monitor progress made to recover the lines. 

Transfers to PRASA by the department amount to R57 billion, accounting for an estimated 27.2% of the Department of Transport’s budget over the medium term. PRASA is already implementing a massive rail modernization programme to the tune of R53 billion.
