Minister Blade Nzimande addresses Higher Health webinar on managing second wave on Coronavirus COVID-19 within PSET, 27 Jan

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will be addressing the Higher Health webinar on Managing the second wave of COVID-19 within the post-school sector.

Higher Health, the agency of the Department of Higher Education and Training, has supported the COVID-19 response across the Post-School Education and Training System (PSET) since the beginning of the pandemic.

As academic institutions prepare to open, various challenges lie ahead, including:

  • A highly transmissible new COVID-19 variant
  • Increased infection among all age groups, especially youth
  • Over-burdened health facilities and quarantine centres
  • Fatigue and attrition among frontline healthcare and essential workers.

The upcoming examination period warrants a need to train and re-energise management, task teams, academia, frontline student support and allied staff. Part of the PSET sector’s preparation to participate in the national COVID-19 vaccine initiative entails training for student leadership, volunteers and peer educators.

Minister Nzimande will be joined by a panelist comprising of the following:

  • Dr Sandile Buthelezi, Director General Department of Health
  • Professor Tim Tucker, Clinical Virologist
  • Dr Kerrigan McCarthy, Clinical Virologist, NICD
  • Professor Ahmed Bawa, CEO: Universities South Africa (USAf)
  • Dr Sibusiso Chalufu, Executive Director: Student Life- North-West University (NWU) and President: SA Association of Senior Student Affairs Professionals (SAASSAP)
  • Mr Sanele Mlotshwa, President of SA Public Colleges Organisation (SAPCO) and Principal, Majuba TVET College
  • Ms Xolile Nkabinde, NEC member of South African Union of Students (SAUS)
  • Mr Siphiwe Khumalo, President of South African Technical Vocational Education and Training Student Association (SATVETSA)
