Minister Ayanda Dlodlo visits Steve Biko Foundation and Nightingales Association, 18 Oct

Minister for the Public Service and Administration Ms. Ayanda Dlodlo, will visit Mama Nontsikelelo Biko, the Nightingales Association and the Steve Biko Foundation Centre in Ginbserg, King Williams Town on Thursday, 18 October 2018 at 9h00.

The visit by Minister Dlodlo is a follow-up engagement after the Ministry for the Public Service and Administration, on 21 September 2018, honored former public servants in the Makhanda area in recognition of their contribution to serving the people of South Africa.  One of the recipients of the Special Recognition Award was Mama Nontsikelelo Biko.

It was during the engagement of September 2018, which formed part of the Public Service Month activities that Minister Dlodlo became aware of the relentless efforts undertaken by these former public servants in improving the lives of the people of Makhanda and surrounding areas.

In response to the challenges faced by Mama Biko and others in the execution of their projects, Minister Dlodlo has also invited other government departments and agencies which will work together with Mama Biko and the Steve Biko Foundation to serve the people of Ginsberg and other beneficiaries of these projects.

The Minister will begin her visit with a walk-about at the Steve Biko Home, which is now a National Heritage Site.  She will then tour the Steve Biko Foundation’s Economic Justice Unit, the Children’s Library and the Biko archives before a stakeholder engagement session with retired nurses who have organised themselves under the umbrella of the Nightingales Association.

The Minister has also extended an invitation to Members of the Executive Council (MECs) or their representatives from the Eastern Cape Provincial Government Departments of Health, Economic Development, as well as Environmental Affairs and Tourism.  She will also be joined by the National School of Government (NSG) which will be tasked with incorporating the retired nurses into the training and mentorship programmes of the NSG.

The Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will also attend the program to assess the level of assistance they can give to the Steve Biko Economic Justice Unit.
