Minister Angie Motshekga shocked and saddened by death of learner at Mondeor High School

The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga is shocked and saddened by reports of the senseless death of 19-year old Kulani Mathebula, a Grade 11 learner at Mondeor High School, who sustained fatal stab wounds, whilst on his way to school this morning.

Law enforcement agencies are investigating this horrendous criminal act, while MEC Panyaza Lesufi and his team are providing the much needed support to the school.

The death of Kulani follows another tragic stabbing barely a week earlier that of Boniface Ndlovu from Emmanuel Secondary School in Kimberly, whose life was also cut short last week for his matric dance shoes.

“The holistic education of our learners is a societal matter, and we, as communities, parents and guardians must instill in our children the notion that violence is not the answer,” said Minister Motshekga.

The Minister is deeply concerned about the high levels of violence being reported in schools and has expressed her full confidence that the police will prioritise this case and do whatever it takes to bring those responsible to book, in so doing, bringing closure to the family that justice is being served.

The Minister also urges communities to take back control of schools, and their community. Minister Motshekga extends her sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased learners, as well as the school communities.
