Minister  Nkwinti meets AmaMpondo Traditional Council and Mbokazi community to discuss the Mbokazi Water Project

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Gugile Nkwinti met with AmaMpondo Traditional Council and members of the community who will be affected by the construction of the Mbokazi Water Project. The meeting took place on Monday, 28 January 2019 at Mbokazi Sports Ground in Mbokazi Village, Lusikisiki.

The meeting was the first consultation by Minister Nkwinti on the Mbokazi Water Project since he was appointed to lead the department in February 2018. He has done this in an effort to get a buy-in from the traditional leadership and community at large and address their concerns about the planned project. Furthermore, the purpose of the meeting was to encourage the stakeholders to establish a project oversight committee.

The Minister appealed to the Mbokazi community and the proposed committee to work with government officials. He mentioned that the work will start with a feasibility study in March 2019. From what has been observed so far, the planned dam that forms part of the Mbokazi water project will generate 1600 megawatts.
