MEC Tertuis Simmers to visit Masiphumelele residents that have taken occupancy of emergency units

Tomorrow, 16 February 2021, Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers will visit and interact with some residents of Masiphumelele who have taken occupation of the temporary emergency structures.

Approximately 1 100 structures were destroyed during a devastating fire in December 2020, which led to the area being declared as a disaster. As at 10 February 2021, 400 emergency units were erected, with 321 already handed over to the fire victims.

Minister Simmers said: “I’m looking forward to engaging our residents and enquire how they’ve settled into their temporary shelter. My visit is also to assure residents that we are committed to conclude this process of assisting them with this temporary relief, while we’re working on a long term and permanent solutions for those residents who would qualify.”

For media present, there will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
