MEC Tertius Simmers on construction of emergency structures in Masiphumelele

Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers says he is pleased to note that the construction of emergency units on the sports field in Masiphumelele is progressing steadily.

As at 30 March 2021, 432 emergency units have been constructed on the sports field, while 253 beneficiaries have already moved into their units. Along with this, 8 standpipes and 30 chemical toilets have also been fitted.

Given the 401 completed and fully occupied units on the site where the devastating fire occurred on 17 December 2020, this means 654 emergency units are now occupied. A further 160 are expected to take occupancy of their units tomorrow (1 April 2021).

Minister Simmers said: “I’m happy that progress is being made on the sports field. As the three spheres of government and the Housing Development Agency, along with the assistance of the community leadership, we will continue to work together, so that those who were affected by this disaster and still waiting for their units, can also be assisted swiftly.

I continue to be concerned about some individuals in the community that are still threatening violence and protest in the area about the temporary units on the sports field. More so, as these residents are seeking to benefit even though they were not affected by this disaster.

It is important to point out that this is only temporary shelter. We’ve commenced with the statutory processes, and it is estimated that this would be concluded by November 2021, provided there are no delays or interruptions. Upon conclusion we will start with long term housing solutions for the most vulnerable and qualifying residents, by providing permanent shelter through the use of Sustainable Building Technology (SBT’s).

I want to thank those community leaders and members who have been assisting us in ensuring that the process to deliver and erect these units is running smoothly.”
