MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi launches a black female owned poultry farm at Shakaskraal, 30 Oct

MEC Sithole-Moloi to officially launch a black female owned poultry farm

This Co-operative was established by black female community members through the background of addressing the challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment within KwaDukuza; with the objective to establish a sustainable egg production business in Umhlali area near Stanger.

The ADA an entity for the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) made an investment of R9 024 938.85 to assist the farm to achieve its objective. In addition Enterprise Ilembe an agency under the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has also made an investment of R2 000 000 towards this initiative.

The ADA initiated its intervention by providing training and capacity building, then the construction of 10 000 layer structure, procurement of pullets (point of lay), layer feed and vet services, drilling of borehole and water supply as well as electrification. Mentorship is also provided through ADA’s intervention to ensure success and sustainability. This poultry farm has entered into an off-take agreement with Nu Dawn Eggs Company to buy all their eggs.

An estimated number of six jobs is to be created when the project is fully operational.
