MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube takes part in fighting gender-based violence in Inanda, 10 Dec

MEC Dube-Ncube to put an end to illegal liquor sale as part of fighting gender-based violence in Inanda

With the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children awareness campaign drawing to a close and concluding on Tuesday, 10 December 2019, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, is living good on her pledge to remedy the scourge of gender-based crimes in the Inanda area by ridding the so-called “rape capital” of illegal liquor outlets.

MEC Dube-Ncube has been in the fore front of the fight against gender-based violence including the abuse of children, genesis of which can be traced to the illicit sale and abuse of alcohol in some areas like Inanda.

Following the release of crime statistics which revealed Inanda as having a huge sexual offences area, President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the station in October. The President said the police in the area were faced with a “huge task” of policing the area and reducing the levels of criminality there.

During his visit, police at the station outlined to him the strategies they would employ to bring the incidents of crime down. Most of the rapes that are reported have taken place here in the recent period and some people call it the rape capital of South Africa, the President Ramaphosa noted saying he was saddened by this “huge dark blot” on the Inanda area.

Accompanied by the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki Ntuli, EDTEA entities; KZN Liquor Authority and KZN Gaming and Betting Board, law enforcement authorities and social partners, MEC Dube-Ncube will identify those businesses trading illegally, selling liquor without a licence and partaking in illegal gambling.

MEC Dube-Ncube has pointed out that Inanda a case study conducted by the Moses Kotane Institute of Technology and SAPS shows that a culture of alcoholism in the area is a contributing factor to the high number of abuses of women and children.

On the 3rd December, the MEC met with stakeholders in the liquor, gaming and betting. They pledged more than R13 million for the implementation of an integrated single plan on the fight against Gender Based Violence.

The MEC is of the view that many victims of gender based violence and innocent women out there will be comforted knowing that stakeholders have agreed on a plan to take advantage of the 4th Industrial Revolution to fight this scourge.

She has informed the people of KZN that stakeholders have agreed on an urgent need to install CCTV cameras in taverns, nightclubs, in our streets, workplaces, recreational centres and other places as part of efforts to turn around the situation.

MEC Dube-Ncube and the department’s stakeholders have agreed that 10 liquor outlets in Amatikwe in Inanda will be fitted with Memeza cameras. They will also install 10 community alarm systems.

“At a press of a button or using a remote control – an sms will be sent to SAPS for the police to ensure speedy intervention during times of distress. The community alarms will have a subscription of 12 months which includes extensive training by the SAPS. In addition, we will install 10 Floodlights to ensure the visibility of patrons and communities,” she said.

She emphasized: “There are some concrete interventions targeting Inanda and will soon be rolled out in other areas.”
