MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube connects Free WiFI and rolls out JL Dube Broadband at Ohlange High School as part of Nelson Mandela Day, 18 Jul

67 minutes dedicated to Madiba is inspiring the digital revolution: Media Alert and statement by the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube

Tomorrow, the 18th July 2020 I will spend 67 minutes connecting Free WiFI and rolling out the JL Dube Broadband at Ohlange High School in Inanda. I will also be focusing on the importance of the acquisition of digital skills required by this province in order to leapfrog stages of socio-economic development. I will be joined by eThekwini Mayor Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda and JL Dube Family.

Spending time ensuring internet connectivity and promoting digital literacy symbolizes hope that the coming years will be characterised by unparalleled changing of people’s lives through the digital revolution.

Importantly, we want to remind the whole world that Madiba went to cast his ballot in the first ever election in his lifetime at the age of 72, at Ohlange.

Thereafter he went to the grave of the first President of the governing party – the African National Congress Dr John Langalibalele Dube. He stood at attention, took a military salute and declared: “Mr President I am here to report that now South Africa is free!”

We have decided to go to Ohlange to re-enact the journey that President Dube took, a century ago, as we, ourselves, start another journey to all corners of the province to connect ordinary members of society to the internet.

Importantly, being at Ohlange – an environment in which one of the giants of our liberation struggle once lived and worked in pursuit of a dream to free his people from the yoke of oppression, will imbue us with a sense of rejuvenation and renewal to work hard to achieve economic freedom.

In order to ensure adherence to social distancing guidelines, I wish to invite members of the media and the public at large to log in and be part of the digital revolution. Follow activities starting tomorrow morning at 10h00 through the following links:
