MEC Nkosi-Malobane applauds the arrest of two correctional officials at Johannesburg Correctional Centre

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has applauded the law enforcement agencies for working around the clock following the escape of 16 awaiting trial inmates that occurred on 09 April 2018 at Johannesburg Medium A Correctional Centre. This is subsequent to the arrest of two correctional officials yesterday for their alleged involvement in aiding the escape.

“It is critically important that through our crime intelligence we should continuously be able to crack such syndicates as incidents of escapes from police custody and correctional centres undermine the work of the criminal justice system to create a safe environment for the citizens of Gauteng. As Gauteng City Region, we have demonstrated our commitment to fight corruption and promote clean governance within the ranks of the Criminal Justice System.

“I welcome the arrest of the two correctional officials and the work done by our law enforcement agencies to stop them in their tracks to tarnish the image of the system and undermine the work of the police in addressing crime in our society.

I am confident that our law enforcement agencies will continue to probe the matter and work closely with all the parties involved.  While the principle of innocent until proven guilty is observed, this should send a strong message that Gauteng has no place for dishonest and corrupt officials in the system.

“The alleged conduct of the two officials is a serious contravention of the ethics and code of conduct for those employed in the criminal justice system. Members of Criminal Justice System are supposed to display the highest level of integrity in discharging their duties. As Government, we will continue with our mandate to root out this immoral behavior and ensure that anyone found guilty faces the full might of law,” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.
