MEC Mothibedi Kegakilwe on meeting with Matlosana CRUs tenants

The North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Mothibedi Kegakilwe has appealed to the tenants of the community residential units in Matlosana CRU, to start paying rent whilst other issues are being addressed.

The tenants argued that the lease agreement contains clauses that are contrary to the Housing Code, CRU policy, Rental Housing Act whilst the lease agreement and code of conduct is also contradicting each other. They also claimed that there is no breakdown of rent-setting with rental increments even as early as three months after having moved into a unit hence the boycott of non-payment by tenants.

At a meeting this week, MEC Kegakilwe said other issues such as maintenance of the units, issuing of correct statements, lease agreements, will be attended to.  He said a process will unfold to determine the rightful and legal occupants of those units and regularise them.

MEC Kegakilwe announced the establishment of a team comprising of three officials from the department, Matlosana local municipality and the North West Housing Corporation to work with the occupants to “normalise the situation” and develop an action plan to address issues raised by the occupants. He added that a budget has been set aside to deal and address the issue of security and fencing around the buildings.

“Whilst we take blame for the poor workmanship, the occupants must also meet us halfway by paying rent whilst we do the maintenance”. He said the Matlosana CRUs were built to address the shortage of accommodation.

He concluded that all tenants will be trained on the CRU Policy as well as Rental Housing Act and going forward communication and consultation with NWHC will be strengthened.
