MEC Jacob Mamabolo expresses concern about high rate road fatalities

MEC Mamabolo calls for extraordinary interventions following the deadly Hammanskraal accident

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo, has expressed his concerns about the high rate of road fatalities following the deadly Hammanskraal accident that occurred  between Pumulani Plaza and Walmansthal on Friday, 27 September 2019.

"I believe that we need extraordinary interventions and a new paradigm shift to reduce the rate of fatalities on our road network," Mamabolo said.

The MEC extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the seven people who lost their lives in the fatal accident.

"We are saddened by the multiple vehicles accident which claimed seven lives. We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wish the injured a speedy recovery. One death on our roads is one too many,” Mamabolo said.

The MEC further urged motorists to always keep a safe following distance and assist the government in reducing the road fatalities.

"We cannot emphasise enough, the importance of exercising caution on the roads. It is unfortunate that the accident happened on the eve of the Transport Month campaign aimed at highlighting road safety issues amongst others, " Mamabolo said.

He also said that the Department in conjunction with all five municipalities in the province met yesterday, 27 September 2019, in a bid to find solutions that will make Gauteng roads safe and less congested.
