State-of-the-art pedestrian bridge to ease movement in Hammanskraal

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo, today unveiled a state-of-the-art 150 meters Kudube/Marokolong Pedestrian Bridge in Hammanskraal, City of Tshwane.

The R2.4 million suspension cable bridge on Kudube Dam and Apies River will bring much needed relief for workers, learners and local entrepreneurs who will now access various services with ease.

Speaking at the handover event, Mamabolo, who was joined by Tshwane Administrators Mpho Nawa, Gilberto Martins as well as community representatives, said that the delivery of the bridge at the right quality, within time and cost effectiveness, sets the tone for other transport infrastructure on the Department's project pipeline.

"The bridge serves both the social and economic infrastructure role for the community. It provides an opportunity to bring the cultural and tourism dimension to the area as it will attract further investment.

"As government, we should look at how to optimize the bridge precinct to turn it into a tourism area supported by existing infrastructure in the area," Mamabolo explained.

The delivery of the bridge is part of the Department's strategy to position Gauteng as a City Region of Smart Mobility where people and goods move efficiently.

Construction started in January 2020 as the condition of the bridge was deteriorating and the project was completed in May 2020.

"The delivery of the bridge sets the standard for the Gauteng Transport Infrastructure House as the heart-beat of transport infrastructure to be formally unveiled to the industry in mid-July. We will be unveiling the Transport Infrastructure Book, which contains the entire project portfolio of the Department," the MEC explained.

This is part of the work the Department is doing to strengthen its internal capacity to deliver adequate transport infrastructure to support economic growth.
