Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, awarded the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Officer, Amanda George, and SAPS Protectors, Constable Roger Wellman and Sergeant Ntsikelelo Makatesi, for service delivery excellence.
In terms of Section 29 of the Community Safety Act, 2013 (Act 3 of 2013), the Minister of Community Safety is authorised to make an appropriate award, including monetary awards, to any member of the community or other person for meritorious service in promoting the Act.
Minister Fritz said, “It is an honour to recognise individuals who ensure service delivery excellence, particularly within the field of community safety. The first individual to be awarded today is a member of Law Enforcement, Officer George. On Women’s Day 2019, she single-handedly pursued and arrested a suspect who allegedly stole tourists’ bank cards and pin numbers at an ATM in Cape Town. She ensured that the suspect was apprehended and that the stolen cards were returned to the tourists. A monetary award of R3000 was given to her.”
Minister Fritz further added, “At the same time, I was able to award the two SAPS Protectors, Constable Wellman and Sergeant Makatesi, who saved my life in Nyanga in August 2017. Together, they foiled an armed robbery and arrested a suspect, resulting in the recovery of stolen property, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Both received monetary commendations from the SAPS and were also subsequently promoted as Warrant Officers."
"While these individuals have exhibited great courage and sterling work, I would also like to thank each safety stakeholder in the province who contributes of themselves tirelessly to safeguard their communities," he said.
Under the leadership of Minister Albert Fritz, the Department of Community Safety will continue to recognise and support service delivery excellence of the safety stakeholders in the Province.
