MEC Albert Fritz appoints Board of Trustees for Chrysalis Academy

Minister Fritz appoints Board of Trustees for Chrysalis Academy

The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, has re-appointed Chrysalis Academy’s Board of Trustees for a further term. Minister Fritz thanks the Trustees which include Dr Marlene le Roux, Solly Moeng, Dr Don Pinnock and (Retired) Judge Deon van Zyl, for their service thus far and looks forward to working more closely with the Board in future.

The Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance of the Chrysalis Academy.

Their duties include:

  • ensuring that annual external audits are completed;
  • compiling and distributing annual reports;
  • approving budgets; and
  • developing annual and three year strategic plans.

Minister Fritz said, “The Trust meets once a quarter to review the activities of the organisation and its expenditure patterns. They set the strategic direction for the organisation and support the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the management in fulfilling their duties.  Annually, the Trustees meet face to face with all staff to outline their vision for the year and to express gratitude to staff for their performance. The CEO reports directly to the Chairperson of the Trust.”

Chrysalis Academy’s Board of Trustees include:

  • Dr Marlene le Roux is the CEO of Artscape and an award-winning human rights activist. She has continuously fought for social justice, with a strong focus on disability and the empowerment of women and youth. “Giving a voice to the voiceless” is her motto.
  • Solly Moeng consults as a brand reputation management advisor, is a columnist and regular current affairs commentator. In addition, he is the founder and convenor of the annual Africa Brand Summit.
  • Dr Don Pinnock is a criminologist specialising in adolescent behaviour, and an environmental journalist. He is a Research Associate at the Centre of Criminology, UCT. He has authored 18 books, including Gang Town, Gangs, Rituals and Rites of Passage and The Brotherhoods.
  • Judge Deon van Zyl is a retired judge of the High Court of South Africa, where he served for 23 years. He is a former Professor of Law at the Universities of the Free State and Pretoria. He further served as the Inspecting Judge at the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services.

Minister Fritz said, “I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees will continue to serve and wish to thank each Trustee for their commitment to youth development. It is through their hard work that Chrysalis Academy has seen over 10 000 young people benefit from its programme. I am confident that their leadership over the next two years will raise Chrysalis’ bar higher.”

Minister Fritz added, “I further wish to thank Chrysalis Academy’s CEO, Lucille Meyer, who has ensured that the Academy’s life-changing work continues despite the lockdown. Whilst the next course has been postponed, the Academy’s management team is rendering psycho-social support to graduates in need; providing daily meditations over social media; conducting an online survey on data access and training needs to ensure that the programme can provide online education where necessary; and preparing for the next cohort. In addition, trained graduates from Chrysalis Academy are being deployed across district municipalities to assist with duties related to the lockdown.”
