Learners at Nompumalanga special school in the Eastern Cape receive a specialised multimedia centre
The Department of Social Development, in partnership with the MTN SA Foundation, will be launching a multimedia centre for children with disabilities at Nompumalanga Special School in Bizana, Eastern Cape on Thursday 02 May 2019.
The boarding school, which is home to 250 learners, caters for children with intellectual learning difficulties. It opened its doors in 2002.
The top of the range multimedia centre comprises 22 computers with specially-designed programs to cater for the learners’ educational and intellectual needs. The centre is also fitted with an interactive board which allows the educator to present the class curriculum to the learners despite their respective needs.
The Department of Social Development is mandated by the Constitution to ensure that the rights of persons with disabilities are prioritised as enshrined in the White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (WPRPD).
The Paper was approved by Cabinet in 2015 and it advocates for the lifelong provision of educational support for persons with disabilities.
The multimedia centre launch forms part of a longstanding Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the Department and the MTN SA Foundation.
Through the PPP, the MTN SA Foundation also fitted a specialised computer laboratory at the Zamokuhle Special School, in Bizana, which caters for 157 visually-impaired learners.
Learners from both schools will be in attendance at the launch of the multimedia centre at Nompumalanga Special School.
