Minister Senzo Mchunu leads clean-up campaign at Khulani High School as part of Mandela Day, 18 Jul

Minister Mchunu to lead a clean- up campaign in Cape Town’s Langa school as part of Mandela Day

Public Service and Administration Minister, Mr Senzo Mchunu will this Thursday, July 18, lead a team of public servants from the Western Cape Province in a clean- up campaign at Khulani High School in Langa Township, Cape Town, as part of the International Mandela Day.

The campaign will involve cleaning and painting of the 483 learner capacity school with aim of promoting a culture of social partnerships between government and citizens, and to encourage active citizenship.

This year’s Mandela Day, which marks its tenth anniversary, is commemorated under theme: “Action against poverty” with sub-themes: “Take Action. Inspire Change - Make Every Day a Mandela Day.”

The annual international day of humanitarian action was launched on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, 18 July, in 2009 through a majority decision by the UN General Assembly, in celebration of Former President Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy. The day is particularly geared towards people doing work in their communities and not event driven. The day is observed throughout the month of July.

The initial strategy asked for citizens to give 67 minutes of their time on the Mr Mandela’s birthday to do good for others and where people were encouraged to act on the idea that each person has the power to change the world.

However, in order for the programme to have a sustainable impact locally and globally, interventions have become strategic with the new approach focusing on effective, sustainable and collaborative interventions that include five key focus areas for global partnerships. These areas are Education and Literacy; Food and Nutrition; Shelter; Sanitation and Active Citizenship.
