KwaZulu-Natal Treasury on achieving the Fiscal Policy Discipline

KZN Legislature lauds KZN Treasury’s Fiscal Policy Discipline

Ever so achieving, KZN Treasury received another feather in the cap from the KZN Legislature Finance Portfolio Committee on Friday, 17 August 2018.

The plaudits came from the Finance Committee chair, the Hon Sipho “KK” Nkosi who lauded KZN Treasury for its professionalism and its commitment to fiscal discipline. The Department, led by DDG Mr Santanu Moodley and Chief Financial Officer Mr Thabani Ndlovu made a moving presentation of the KZN Treasury Vote 6 2018/19 First Quarter Financial and Non-financial Performance Report.

While acknowledging a few challenges, KZN Treasury convinced the Finance Committee that the boat has not been rocked. The team also pledged that the successive clean audits that the department has maintained look likely to be sustained once again this financial year. Mr Ndlovu pointed out to a few issues, like VAT increase but assured these were otherwise surmountable. He explained all the variances encountered convincing the committee that despite gloomy economic outlook and waves of volatility the MEC Belinda Scott and the HOD Simiso Magagula were steering a steady ship.

He pointed out that all five programmes, as budgeted for in March and as voted by the legislature in May, were performing at an optimal level. He said even those that have started slowly due to staffing challenges, were now picking up the tempo.

Commending KZN Treasury, Hon Nkosi said the department remained number one in the country in terms of how they do things. He extolled KZN Treasury’s record as a tough act to follow. He said KZN Treasury was above the national average and has stayed in the summit even way above National Treasury and the often-praised Western Cape Treasury.

“I really must thank you for a job well done. It is always pleasing and encouraging to see you doing way more in maintaining fiscal discipline. I also think members of the committee see that as well and we are extremely proud of you,” said Hon Nkosi.

“I wish there were journalists here to hear this and write about it,” said Hon Nkosi. The committee was unanimous in its praise of KZN Treasury with no single member raising any issues.
