North West holds meeting to discuss intervention at JB Marks Local Municipality

Statement on the Section 139 (1)(B) intervention at the JB Marks local municipality

The North West Provincial Government, together with the JB Marks Local Municipality, has resolved to further engage in discussion to find common ground in the input of Executive Council decision to make Section 139(1)(b) intervention notice that was served on the municipality on May 13, 2019.

This decision was taken at a meeting led by Premier Job Mokgoro and attended by the MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Mme Motlalepula Rosho, the Executive Mayor of the JB Marks Local Municipality, Cllr Kgotso Khumalo as well as senior government and municipal officials.

The meeting established a joint technical team of officials from the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements and those from the JB Marks Local Municipality; who will in the course of the next two weeks report to the Premier on the course of intervention to be collaboratively implemented between Provincial Government and Municipality.

Premier Mokgoro reiterated the commitment of Provincial Government to ensure that any decision taken on JB Marks Local Municipality is substantially fair and procedural.

Provincial Government considers the JB Marks Local Municipality as a critical Municipality whose performance should be protected and improved as has been the case in recent years.

Further elaboration on the detail and full extent of implementation of intervention in the municipality will be communicated once the technical team has reported back to the Premier.
