Water and Sanitation on stable Integrated Vaal River System water levels

The IVRS water levels decline slightly but remain above 100% mark this week

The Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) water levels are stable this week after they remained above 1000% for the past weeks. The system is currently sitting at 101.0% while it hovered at 101.9% last week. In the preceding year at the same time, the System was at 88.6%.

The IVRS, which consists of 14 dams, is the lifeblood of Gauteng’s economy and supplies Sasol and Eskom.

Slightly down this week, the Vaal Dam has decreased to 105.9% this week from 106.8% last week. Compared to the same time last year the dam was sitting at 96.6%.

The Grootdraai Dam declined slightly, recording 100.0% this week as against 100.9% a week ago. Contrasted with last year’s levels during the same time, the Grootdraai Dam was at 88.9%.

Similarly, the Katse Dam has declined this week sitting at 95.1% from 97.6% of the previous week. At the same time last year, the Katse Dam was at 73.0%, showing a healthy recharge which is good for the IVRS.

On the downturn this week is Bloemhof Dam which slightly declined from 105.5% last week to 103.1% this week. In the preceding year at the same time, the Bloemhof Dam was at 107.0%.

The Sterkfontein Dam has also recorded a minor decrease to 100.8% this week from 100.6% last week. Last year during the same time the Sterkfontein Dam was sitting at 98.7%.

Department of Water and Sanitation in Gauteng urges the public to monitor their water use and ensure that the available water is used wisely and in a conservative manner to ensure the security of supply for the benefit of all.
